Basset y Obediencia

Probablemente un Basset Hound nunca va a ser la primer elección de raza si uno esta buscando un perro para entrenar en obediencia! El hecho que esta raza es testaruda y terca hace que algunos cometan el error de pensar que esta raza no es inteligente. Pregunto "Cuanta inteligencia es necesaria para hacer lo que uno esta mandado para hacer, sin ninguna razón – excepto que tienes que hacerlo – porque eres perro?".

A Basset Hound will probably never be the first choice of breed, if somebody is looking for a dog to train in obedience! The fact that this breed is somewhat wilful and stubborn, some make the huge mistake thinking that this breed is not intelligent! I ask: "How much intelligence is needed just to do what is told, without any other reason - except that it is expected of you - because you are a dog"?

Aprender rápido, no es exactamente lo mismo que ser inteligente, aunque ayuda mucho en sacar resultados rápidos. No siempre se saca resultados rápidos con un Basset Hound, pero ayuda mucho si estás dispuesto a aprender. Con los Bassets debes ganar la sabiduría de su naturaleza, y después la sabiduría del camino correcto para enseñarlo – y entonces el va a estar listo para jugar tu "juego " con ganas y alegría. Bueno, casi siempre, no te olvides que estamos hablando de Bassets. No es una de las razones por lo cual quedaste enamorado con esta raza encantadora, qué el tiene su propia mente? Sin embargo, ellos pueden hacerlo!! Después de 17 años de experiencia con mis Basset Hounds, viendo y leyendo sobre otros dueños de Basset Hounds quienes han tenido buenos resultados, se que es verdad. Entrenamos en casa, pero adicionalmente entrenamos con el Club Danés del Basset, donde la instructora misma ha tenido y criado Bassets por mucho tiempo. El Club Danés del Basset representa 5 razas distintas de Basset, el Grand y el Petit, Basset Griffon Vendeen, el Basset Bleu de Gascogne, el Basset Fauve de Bretagne, el Basset Artesian Normand y el Basset Hound.

To learn fast, is not exactly the same as being intelligent, although it helps in getting quick results. You do not always get quick results with a Basset Hound, but it helps a lot if you are willing to learn. With Bassets you must gain the wisdom of his nature, then the wisdom of the right way to train him - then he will be ready to play your "game" with both eager and joy. Well almost always - don't forget we are talking about Basset Hounds! Isn’t it one of the reasons we fall in love with this charming breed, that he has a mind of his own? However they can do it! From 17 years of experience with training my own Basset Hounds, seeing and reading about other Bassets owners making good results, I know it to be true. We train at home, but we also train obedience with the Danish Basset Club, where the instructor is herself a long time owner and breeder of Bassets. The Danish Basset Club covers 5 different Basset breeds, Grand and Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, Basset Bleu de Gacogne, Basset Fauve de Bretagne, Basset Artesian Normand and Basset Hound.

He won the Bronze title as Obedience Dog of the year 1990, and past the obedience trials in both class 1 and 2. Un Basset Hound necesita una buena motivación para trabajar contigo, y esto hace que esta raza sea un desafío para trabajar. En realidad, entrenando a un Basset Hound no sacas resultados gratis, como salen cuando uno trabaja con otras razas. Tienes que estar preparado para trabajar fuerte si quieres buenos resultados! Esto no significa que tengas que trabajar el perro de una forma fuerte ni ser severo con el, pero tenes que dar todo, en tantas distintas maneras. Necesitas mucho paciencia, tienes que ser muy porfiado, y tienes que conocer, amar y respetar esta raza.

A Basset Hound needs and wants a good reason to work with you, and that makes this breed a great challenge to work with. In fact, in training a Basset Hound you get nothing for free, like you do when training most other breeds. You have to be prepared to work hard if you want good results! By working hard I do not mean that you have to train the dog hard or even treat him harsh, but you really have to give it all you got, in many ways. You need a lot of patience, you need to be very persistent, and you need to know, love and respect this breed.

Creo que una de las palabras claves de entrenamiento con un Basset Hound es DIVERTIRSE! Un Basset Hound le encanta divertirse! Un Basset Hound que es haragán, que tiene como su fin, de solamente dormir y comer – es un Basset Hound aburrido! Tienes que enseñar a tu perro que es divertido "jugar" a la obediencia. Tu perro necesita aprender que tú eres el "perro dominante" y si el colabora contigo, lo vas a amar y respetar y ser su mejor amigo. Vas a ganar un compañero maravilloso, un perro que confía en ti – pero también un perro en lo cual tú podes confiar. Lo vas a conocer mejor y tener mas fe en el.

I think that one of the key words in training a Basset Hound is FUN! A Basset Hound loves to have fun! A lazy Basset Hound who’s main goal in life, is only to sleep and eat - is a bored Basset Hound! You have to teach your dog that it is fun to "play" obedience with you. Your dogs needs to learn, that you are the "lead-dog" and if he co-operates with you, you will love him, respect him, and be his best friend. You will gain a wonderful companion, a dog that trust in you - but also a dog you can trust. You get to know him so much better, and have more faith in him.

Benoit’s Bugsy-Bernard llamado Misha. Hasta ahora es el perro mas exitoso en obediencia que hemos tenido, probo las dos clases, 1 y 2. Ahora tiene 11 años, y ha ganado los siguientes premios del Club Dances del Basset: Oro Perro de Obediencia de 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, Plata Perro de Obediencia de1996, 1999. Un año Misha gano premios en clase 1 y en clase 2!!

Benoit’s Bugsy-Bernard called Misha. So far he is the most successful obedience dog we have had, passing both class 1 and 2. He is now 11 years old, and has won the following titles of the Danish Basset club: Gold Obedience Dog of the year 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, Silver Obedience Dog of the year 1996, 1999. Even one year Misha won a title in both class 1 and 2.

Creo que un Basset Hound puede aprender y quiere aprender, porque un Basset Hound es un jugador de equipo! Cazan en jauría y por su naturaleza están contentos estando con muchos otros perros, personas o hasta gatos, mientras que no esten solos. En un buen equipo todos conocen su lugar, todos son individuos y todos tienen que poder colaborar con los otros. Aunque estais solamente tú y tu Basset Hound, el va a siempre considerarte como su jauría. En todas buenas jaurías o equipos tiene que haber un líder, y si tu perro es Basset Hound mejor que seas tú el líder!! El es demasiado inteligente y si nota que tú no lo eres, va a tomar ventaja. Entrenándolo para obediencia es una excelente manera de mostrarle su "lugar", pero también es muy divertido y un desafío para vosotros dos. Con un Basset nunca se puede esperar que va a obedecer cada palabra cada vez – a veces puede ser que necesita pensar que hay algo en eso para el! Este hecho es mas fácil aceptar si tienes un buen sentido de humor y mucho cariño por tu perro y paciencia.

I believe that a Basset Hound can learn and wants to learn, because a Basset Hound is a "team-worker"! They hunt in packs and by nature they are most happy being with a lot of other dogs, people or even cats, as long as they are not all alone. On a good team everybody knows his place, everybody is an individual and everybody has to be able to co-operate with the others. Even if there is only you and your Basset Hound, he will always consider you to be his pack. In every good pack or team there has to be a leader, and if your dog is a Basset Hound - it better be you who is the leader! He is way to smart not to notice if you aren't, and he will take advantage immediately. To train obedience is both a good way to show him his "place", but also a lot of fun and challenge for both of you. With a Basset Hound you must never expect him to obey your every word every time – he might sometimes needs time to think if there is something in it for him! That fact is much more easy to live with, if you have a lot of humour, and a lot of love for your dog and is patient.

Como hijo de Misha, esperamos que va a seguir ganando en la pista de obediencia en el futuro. Benoit’s Tucky-Tomster became Silver Obedience dog of the year 2002. If this position were one of obedience exercises, Tomster would win it all. However he has thought himself to sit this way, and use it whenever he wants some extra attention. Charming, right? As a son of our Misha, we hope he will continue to do well in the obedience ring in the future. Normalmente un Basset Hound esta crecido a los 2 años, creo que también esta cierto por sus mentes. Por esto no espero que mi Basset Hound prueba su primer competencia hasta este edad. Empiezo con el entrenamiento a penas tiene la edad par competir en la categoría de cachorro, y sigo por lo menos por los 2 – 3 años o hasta que siguen pasándolo bien! Alrededor de los 2 años de edad, según el perro, empiezo a ser mas insistente con el perro, poco a poco pidiendo que sea mas obediente! A este edad ya entiende la mayoría de los distinto ejercidos entonces empiezo a entrenarlo mas seguido. Siempre entrena con distintos ejercicios, pero con un tiempo máximo de 10 – 20 minutos cada vez, si no se va a aburrir. Siempre empiezo el entrenamiento con algo que le gusta para que se siente bien y contento. Después algunas de las cosas que no le gusta tanto, y terminamos con algo que hace muy bien. De esta manera siento que tenemos un buen comienzo y un buen fin! Así mi perro y yo hemos sido exitosos en nuestra entrenamiento y con suerte aprendimos un poquito mas.

 Normally a Basset Hound is full-grown around the age of 2 years old, I believe that to be true with their minds as well. That is why I do not expect my Basset Hound to pass their first obedience-trial until that age. I start training them as soon as they are old enough for puppy-class, and I continue for at least the first 2-3 years or for as long as they still think it is lots of fun! At the age of about 2 years, depending on the individual dog, I start being more persistent with the dog, slowly expecting him to be more obedient! At that time he understand most of the different exercises, so I try to train more often. Train always in different exercises, but only max. 10-20min. at a time, or he will soon get bored. Always I start the training with something he likes, so he will feel good and be happy. Then some of the things he might not like so much, and then we finish with something he is good at. That way I fell we have a good start - and a good finish! Then both my dog and I have been successful in our training, and in between he hopefully have learned a little more.

Benoit’s Ubbe af Marke Moelle, uno de la proxima generacion. Este año probo su primer competencia de obediencia, con solamente un punto mas que Tomster. Benoit’s Ubbe af Marke Moelle, one of the new generation. This year he past his first obedience trial, just one point after Tomster. A nuestros Basset Hounds les encanta y disfrutan tanto de ir a entrenarse, donde puedan conocer otros perros y personas, que es un placer muy grande llevarlos. Como tenemos 10 perros y no podemos llevarlos todos a entrenar al mismo tiempo, los que quedan en casa están desconformes. Aunque tienen muchos familiares y amigos en casa, todos les gusta conocer nuevos amigos. Imagínate como un Basset solo sentiriria ser parte de una jauría por lo menos una vez por semana? Si estas demasiado ocupado para dar a tu Basset el placer de aprender y estar con otros perros, creo que tendrías que reconsiderar ser dueño de un perro, es lo menos que puedes hacer para tu mejor amigo, y has mandarías a tu hijo a la escuela, no es cierto?

Our Basset Hounds love and enjoy so much to go to training, where they can meet other dogs and people, that it is such a great pleasure for us to take them there. As we have 10 dogs and cannot take them all to training at the same time, the ones staying at home are very upset. Even if they have lots of family and friends at home, they all still enjoy meeting new friends. Imagine how a single Basset would feel being a member of pack of dogs at least once a week? If you are too busy to give your Basset the pleasure of learning and being with other dogs, maybe you should re-consider owning a dog, as it is the least you can do for the your best friend, and you would sent your child to school, wouldn't you?

Benoit’s Triton af Marke Moelle es nuestro macho mas joven, el va a estar listo por su primer competencia el año que viene. Como nuestros otros Basset Hounds el disfruta mucho colaborar con nosotros en obediencia Benoit’s Triton af Marke Moelle is our youngest male, he will be ready to past his first trial next year. As our other Basset Hounds he enjoys very much to co-operate with us in obedience. Después de tantos años de entrenamiento de obediencia con nuestros Bassets, no sentimos que hay mucho diferencia entrenando a los machos comparados a las hembras. Puede ser que algunas hembras maduran un poco mas rápido, pero los dos son un placer para trabajar. Como también criamos Bassets, el momento que las hembras están para probar su primara competencia, es el mismo momento que están listos para tener su primera camada. Esta es la única razón por loacual que hemos tenido mas éxito con nuestros machos en la pista de obediencia. La hembra fundadora de nuestra criadero, Olympus E.L. Cinnabar probo su primera competencia de obediencia cuando tenia a penas 9 meses, pero después de tener su primer camada no veía mas la razón por lo cual entrenar mas. Como ella tenia razón, siendo tan dulce y fácil para la convivencia, siempre haciendo lo que pedimos, estuvimos de acuerdo. Su nieta Gayla Bohemia Horrido, tiene un opinión totalmente contrario, después de 3 camadas, ella tiene 7 años, y esta lista para trabajar con nosotros de nuevo – a ella le encanta totalmente y se divierta mucho haciéndolo.

After so many years of training obedience with our Bassets, we don’t feel there is much difference in training male compared to females. Well perhaps some bitches mature in mind a little sooner, but both are a pleasure to work with. However as we also breed our Bassets, the time that the bitches are ready to past their first trial, is about the same time as they are ready for their first litter. That is the only reason we have had most success with our males in the obedience-ring. The foundation bitch of our kennel, Olympos E.L. Cinnabar actually past her first obedience trial when she was only 9 months old, but after having her first litter she couldn’t see the point in training anymore. As she was right, being so sweet and easy to live with, always doing what we told her too, we agreed. Her grand-daughter Gayla Bohemia Horrido, has a totally different opinion. After her 3 litters, she is now at the age of 7 years and very ready to work with us again – she just love it and have lots of fun doing it.

Un Basset Hound adora ser el centro de atención, le encanta ser elogiado y recibir galletitas por portarse bien. Gozan de una vida activa, y si no puedan salir a cazar como originalmente hicieron, entrenando obediencia es una buena substituto. En verdad hace que reciban mucho respeto de gente que piensan que los Basset Hounds son una raza con una pinta cómica que son haraganes y no tienen uso. Realmente hace que las gente se den vuelta para mirar a un Basset Hound contento y orgulloso que esta contento trabajando con su dueño. Entonces, SI! por su puesto entrenamiento y competencia en obediencia es para los Basset Hounds!!

I hope that the readers of this article will be inspired to work obedience with their Basset Hound, because there is so much to gain, both for themselves but especially for their dog. A Basset Hounds loves to be the centre of attention, enjoys to be praised and get dog-cookies for doing good. He enjoys an active life, and if he cannot go hunting as he originally where made to do, training obedience is a wonderful substitute. It actually gives a lot of respect from people who think Basset Hounds are just a funny looking, lazy and good for nothing breed. It can really turn some heads, seeing a happy and proud Basset Hound who is enjoying to work with its owner. So yes, off cause obedience training and trial is for Basset Hounds!
