Maree Mckenzie - Criadero Longfellow

En esta ocasión Belfo a belfo se traslada a Australia para conocer a Maree Mckenzie titular del Criadero Longfellow en Brisbane, Australia y Juez desde el año 1972 convirtiéndose en Juez de Todas las Razas en 1990, habiendo juzgado ya en muchos paises en todo el mundo.

Maree creció junto a sus perros y pertenece a la tercera generación de Criadores en su familia, todo comenzó con su abuelo criador de Golden Retrievers y su padre criador de Cocker Spaniels, convirtiéndose ella en una de las mejores criadoras australianas de Basset Hound.
Queremos agradecer a Maree su colaboración y estamos orgullosos de contar con criadores como ella, humanos y que no buscan en la crianza el negocio fácil y vivir a costa de sus Basset.

This time Belfo a Belfo moves to Australia to meet Maree McKenzie from Longfellow Kennel in Brisbane, Australia and Judge since 1972, becoming a n All Breeds Judge in 1990, having judged extensively in many countries around the world.
Maree grew up with dogs and She is a third generation breeder, her Grandfather bred Golden Retrievers and her Father Cocker Spaniels, she has become one of the best Basset Hound breeders in Australia.
We want to thank Maree because of her collaboration and we are proud of relying on breeders like her, humans and who don´t look for making easy money with Basset Hounds.


1. When and How did you become a Basset Hound breeder.?

I began in Basset Hounds in New Zealand in 1968 and registered my Kennel LONGFELLOW in 1970 when I bred my first litter. I first saw Bassets in England in the 60's when as a teenager I did a tour of the country, fell in love with the breed and was determined to have them when I returned home.My first stock were all English bloodlines, mainly GRIMS and FREDWELL.

1. Cuándo y cómo comenzó su actividad en la raza Basset Hound?

Empecé en Nueva Zelanda en 1968 y registré mi criadero Longfellow cuando crié mi primera camada. La primera vez que vi un Basset fue en Inglaterra en los años sesenta cuando era una adolescente, recorrí mi pais, me enamoré de la raza y tomé la determinación de tener Basset cuando volviera a casa. Mi primera estirpe fue toda de línea inglesa, principalmente Grims y Fredwell.



2. How many puppies have you bred.?

I would have bred about twenty litters since 1970 and I usually run on two or three puppies from a litter to see if they are of top show quality, the other puppies are sold to loving homes as family pets.

2. Cuantas camadas ha criado?

Debo haber criado unas veinte camadas desde 1970 y normalmente me quedo dos o tres cachorros de la camada para ver si gozan de una alta calidad de exposición, los otros cachorros los vendo a hogares amantes de los animales de compañía.


3. How many Basset Hounds bred by yourself have become Champions.?

I have bred over 100 Show Champions, mostly owned and exhibited by myself but I have sold pups that have become Champions and have been Foundation stock for new Kennels.

4. Which was your first winning dog.? Tell us about it.

My first winning Basset was a Bitch. She was a Red/White - one of the first of that colour to be shown in New Zealand. It was quite difficult in the early days as Judges had only seen Tri-colours and I met with a certain amount of colour prejudice........However, in 1971 a famous English judge put her up at a big National Show - Bitch CC and Reserve Best of Breed and she never looked back becoming a Champion in New Zealand and then I sent her to Australia for afew months to be shown and get her Australian Champion title.

4. Cuál fue su primer perro ganador?

Mi primer Basset ganador fue una hembra bicolor, una de las primeras de ese color que se mostró en Nueva Zelanda. Fue bastante difícil porque los Jueces en aquellos tiempos sólo habían visto Basset tricolores y yo me encontré con un motón de prejuicios. Después la envié a Australia durante unos meses para exponerla y consiguió su título de Campeona Australiana.


5. Have you ever been in any American or South American show.? Which shows in Europe have you taken part? and in Australia.?

Not to America or South America or Europe, because of strict quarantine laws we cannot send dogs overseas and get them back except between New Zealand and Australia without lengthy stays in Quarantine kennels. In both these countries I still exhibit my Hounds at Basset Hound Club specialties and All Breed Shows. I have judged Basset Hounds in many countries including Singapore, Hawaii, Rep. of Ireland, England, the USA, Scandinavia and of course NZ. and Australia. I shall be returning to England in 2004 to judge Bassets and also the Basset Hound Club of Denmark.

5. Estuvo alguna vez en exposiciones en USA, América del Sur o Europa?

Nunca he participado en America, América del Sur o Europa porque debido a las estrictas normas de cuarentena no podemos enviar perros al extranjero y traerlos de vuelta, excepto entre Nueva Zelanda y Australia, sin que pasen largas temporadas en cuarentena. En ambos paises, todavía exhibo mis basset Hound en las especializadas del Basset Hound Club y en las exposiciones generales.
He juzgado Basset Hounds en muchos paises, incluidos Singapur, Hawai, Irlanda, Inglaterra, Estados Unidos, Escandinavia y por supuesto Nueva Zelanda y Australia. Volveré a Inglaterra en el 2004 para juzgar Basset Hound y también acudíré al Basset Hound Club de Dinamarca.


6 & 7 Which is the first thing you look for in a Basset? Which are the basic approaches in Breed.? (I will answer these together)

The first thing I look for in a Basset is overall balance - the proportions of the Hound meeting the requirements of the Standard. I am looking for Breed type and Soundness which includes temperament - Bassets should be mild and approachable, never timid or aggressive. Movement is most important - reaching forward in front and driving from the rear with good extension and making it look effortless. I like a dog with substance and bone, but not coarse, and I do like a correct head, one with good proportions of skull, lowset inward curling ears, and that lovely expression that tells you that it is a Basset. A sound front with nice tight feet is most important, as is correct ribbing, topline and nice quarters with a good turn of stifle and short hocks. A good tail set on correctly, carried up but not right over the back finishes the picture of what I like in a Basset.

6 & 7. Qué es lo primero que mira en un Basset Hound? Cuales son para usted los criterios básicos a tener en cuenta en la crianza? (las contestaré conjuntamente)

La primera cosa que busco en un Basset es el equilibrio conjunto, que las proporciones del Basset coincidan con los requerimientos del standar, Busco volumen y temperamento. Los Basset deben ser apacibles y accesibles, nunca tímidos ni agresivos. el movimiento es muy importante con buena extensión y que parezca natural. Me gustan los perros con sustancia y hueso, pero no vulgares u ordinarios, con una cabeza correcta, cráneo proporcionado, perfectas orejas y esa preciosa expresión que te dice que es un Basset. Un frente voluminoso y unas bonitas y firmes patas es una de las cosas más importantes, como unas correctas costillas y bonitos cuartos traseros.


8. What would you say to people who have a dream about a winning dog.? Which advice would you give to them.?

I f you want a good show quality Basset, go and sit ringside at shows, see a good cross section of dogs and make a note of which Kennel or Kennels seem to consistently produce winners and have a good reputation. You may purchase a puppy who has great show potential, but it is up to you to bring that potential out. Follow the Breeders instructions and remember that turning it into a top winner depends as much on correct diet, training and conditioning etc., as it does the quality of the puppy, especially during the first 12 months

8. Que puede decirles a los que sueñan con criar un perro ganador, que consejos puede darles?

Si quieres un Basset de buena calidad para exponer, ve y siéntate junto al ring en las exposiciones, fíjate en un buen número de de perros y toma nota de qué criadero o criaderos parezca que produzcan campeones y tengan buena reputación. debes comprar un cachorro potencialmente bueno en exposiciones, pero dependerá de ti sacar a la luz ese potencial. Sigue las instrucciones que te den los criadores y recuerda que el convertirle en uno de los mejores campeones depende en mayor medida de una correcta alimentación, formación y condiciones, etc., ello dará calidad al cachorro, especialmente durante sus primeros doce meses.


9. What do you think of the level of the Breed in Australia.?

The breed in Australia is not as strong as it was in the 1980's and early 90's, we had more dogs being shown and many more Breeders. At the present time I would say we had more bitchs shown than dogs but I feel that out top winners could compete anywhere in the world. Breeders are still importing from England and the USA so there is still an overseas gene pool one can use. Australian bred Basset Hounds have been exported around the world and have been shown to their Championship titles and we still have Bassets here in every State in Australia winning Bests in Show at our bigger All Breeds Shows.

9. Como ve el nivel de la raza Basset Hound en Australia?

La raza en Australia no es tan fuerte como lo fue en los ochenta y a principios de los noventa, tenemos más perros en exposición y más criadores. Actualmente, diría que tenemos más hembras en exposición que machos, pero considero que los perros ganadores que encabezan las listas podrían competir en cualquier lugar del mundo. Los criadores todavían estan importando ejemplares de Inglaterra y Estados Unidos, así que todavía existen unos genes extranjeros que se utilizan.

10. Which specimen have you bred that you believe is the most outstanding and why.?

This was a hard question to answer - I can think of several I considered really top quality, Multiple Best in Show winners at both Specialty and All Breed level, and some have held both New Zealand and Australian Champion titles. In recent years I guess a Tri-coloured bitch NZ/Aust.Ch. Longfellow M'lle. Sallie was quite outstanding, not only was she a Multilpe BIS winner but a wonderful producer. She only ever had two litters but out of these she had 9 Champions, one dog has obtained his New Zealand Grand Champion title and each of those 9 dogs has won a Best in Show. I am now training a Grandson of hers and hoping for the same success with him. She was such a sound, typey bitch and passed these attributes to her offspring. ( I still think she is lovely, winning a large Veteran class just recently.)
This has given you some insight to my life with Basset Hounds, they have given me so much pleasure and I can't imagine life without them.

10. De todos los ejemplares que ha criado, cual cree usted es el más destacado y porqué?

Es una pregunta difícil de responder. Puedo pensar en varios que considero realmente de alta calidad, ganadores múltiples de Best In Show en especializadas y en generales, y algunos que han conseguido títulos de campeones australianos y de Nueva Zelanda.
Recientemente, descubrí una hembra tricolor campeona astraliana y de Nueva Zelanda Longfellow M´lle. Sally fue bastante sobresaliente, no solamente fue una ganadora de múltiples Best In Show, sino también una maravillosa reproductora. Sólo tuvo dos camadas pero de esos nueve fueron campeones, un perro se ha convertido en el nuevo Gran Campeón Neozelandés y cada uno de esos nueve han obtenido un Best In Show.
Ahora estoy entrenando a uno de sus nietos y espero el mismo éxito con él. Ella fue tan maravillosa que ha transmitido estos atributos a su descendencia. (todavía croe que es especial ya que ganó el premio a la veteranía hace poco).
Esto puede darte una idea de mi vida con los Basset Hounds, ellos me han proporcionado tantas satisfacciones que no puedo imaginar mi vida sin ellos.
